…subject TERRORISM – using the example of the failed Al-Qaeda bombing attempt on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009
On December 25, 2009 the passenger Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to set off plastic explosives during the airline flight from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to Metro Airport in Detroit. The plane made an emergency landing in Detroit, 20 minutes before scheduled landing approach. The assassin was restrained by a Dutch passenger. Three of the 289 people on board were injured: the bomber and two other passenger.
Who was the bomber – some facts:
- Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23 years old
- Native Country: Nigeria
- Religion: Islam
- He is the youngest of 16 children of Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, one of the richest men in Africa. (Former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria and former Nigerian Federal Commissioner for Economic Development.)
- He had studied engineering in England and earned a degree in mechanical engineering in June 2008.
There´s no doubt that the secret service of the US failed at the assassination attempt of Detroit but nevertheless President Obama reveals who is the responsive person in his opinion: HIMSELF!
“The buck stops with me”, with these words Mr. Obama pointed out that the crisis of the US-secret service is also his personal failure, as he declared at the news conference on Thursday, 7 of January 2010. Nevertheless he also made clear that U.S. intelligence agencies could have prevented the attempt to bomb an airline: Sufficient indices definetely existed to stop Abdulmutallab but they have been undervalued!
Change in the world´s policy?? – What will you do now Mr. Obama?
Even if the President originelly desired a CHANGE in the world´s terrorism policy AWAY FROM THE “WAR ON TERROR” he was absolutely determined to open the fight against terrorism now. (concerning his speech of Tuesday, 5. of January 2010)
The following improvements are intended for a better security of the American citizens:
- Expansion of the US “no-fly” list to include people with Abdulmutallab’s profile
- Additional screening on all domestic or US-bound international flights
- Enhanced screening for anyone flying to the United States from a “country of interest”
- Automatic check of terrorism suspects to determine whether they possess U.S. visas
My personal opinion concerning Obama´s terrorism policy:
I personally appreciated President Obama´s opinion to negate the typical American idea of “if you´re not with us – you´re against us” and his willingness to effect a change in the world´s terrorism policy! But nevertheless he must act NOW against the world´s terrorism and in my opinion, he WILL act now! From my point of view Obama´s way to fight against terrorism already changed after the suicide attack in Afghanistan at which seven CIA members were killed! Last week he has announced several changes for better security of the US citizens - we will see how they´ll work – but since 25 of December, 2009 one certainty is absolutely obvious to me: Terrorism will form Obama´s presidentship as well as it formed Bush´s one!

Howdy, “great topic”, GREAT BLOG! ..in my opinion history seems to be repeating itself, but the weapons have become more deadly & the world seems a smaller place since the days of Vietnam. Who would have thought that the Obama adm. would fall into the same old traps? I would say that the peoples of East Africa have long contended with empires. Like the Vietnamese. The empires come & go, leaving grief & bloodshed, but a core of the population always survives. There will always be people who are against like we have currently the problem with Al-quaeda and that bombing attempt..
Howdy, you´re right, now we´ve to face a scenario and consider, right now there are over a million refugees scattered across the desert because of the Iraq invasion. Most are women and Children. Half of those children are or were boys. One of those boys is probably a man by now, or will be soon. His most traumatic memory is American turning his life upside down. All it takes is a guy like Osama Bin Laden to get inside his head, convince him to take revenge for his personal plight. He just needs someone to press the right button and push in the right direction. What if that boy, who is now a man, or may be in the future, decided to fly a plane into the freedom tower? If a reporter asked you why he did it, what are you going to say? That he was crazy? That he hated our freedom? Religious fervor? Inspired by the Quran? NO! Terrorist are driven by the same emotions that drive other people to commit violet acts. So why did the young boy grow up to fly a plane into the freedom tower? Why did the Fort Hood Guy do what he did? Why did this Nigerian guy do what he did? What about the Jordanian CIA bomber? They are part of a new wave of terrorism, created by the Bush administration. The Iraq invasion killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, created one of the world´s largest refugee problems, and it created this new wave of terrorism. Stuff like that gets to people, especially when it´s for the Bush Administration´s nefarious ambitions. Once again, why did that young man grow up to fly a plane into the freedom tower? Want to stop the problem? Stop throwing candy at those kids´ faces, get to then first and give them a future. That´s a start to preventing future terrorism in my opinion!
